PRO TIPS FOR A PERFECT PORTRAIT IN LONDON
This guide will help you have your desired portrait, choosing the most relevant location, picking the most impactful wardrobe, selecting the right London portrait photographer and giving you inspiration and lots of tips.
Headshot vs Portrait
Headshots are typically used for professional purposes, such as business profiles, resumes, LinkedIn profiles or corporate websites, and aim to showcase your face clearly and professionally, conveying trustworthiness, approachability, and competence.
Portraits, on the other hand, are more artistic and may be used for personal branding, social media, family albums, or artistic expression, capturing your personality and character, in a broader context. See this example gallery of a lifestyle photoshoot in London for our client’s personal branding.
HEADSHOT vs PORTRAIT
On Location vs Studio Portraits vs Outdoor Portraits
The choice between studio, location and outdoor depends on the purpose and of your portrait, each option offering unique advantages and challenges.
Studio Portraits
Studios provide complete control over lighting, temperature and background, allowing for consistent and predictable results. They offer privacy, which can be beneficial if you prefer a more intimate setting or need confidentiality.
Customized with various props, backdrops, and lighting setups to achieve different looks and moods, a studio is a controlled setting, with fewer distractions, enabling the photographer to focus solely on you.

Location Portraits
For professionals, location portraits in their workplace can serve as branding assets, reinforcing their expertise and professional image.
Shooting in your professional environment adds authenticity and context. You may feel more comfortable and confident in familiar surroundings, leading to more natural and relaxed poses and expressions.
The location itself can tell a story about your work, skills, and personality, providing viewers with insight into your professional life.
Outdoors Portraits
Outdoor environments offer diverse and visually appealing backgrounds, adding depth and interest to your portraits and often provide beautiful natural light, which can result in flattering and soft illumination, especially during golden hours. But not only, London knows rain often, see this gallery of outdoors portraits on a rainy day.
Such a setting can evoke a sense of authenticity and personality, capturing you in your favorite photo spot in London and allow for dynamic compositions, including movement, interaction with surroundings, and creative framing.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER
Your primary objective must be to ensure that your portrait photography session is as comfortable and stress-free as possible, because…
Relaxation is essential to achieving flattering portraits.
FRAN, PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHER AT THE NOW TIME
Drawing from our experience photographing hundreds of individuals, an atmosphere that feels effortless and natural is key to capturing the essence of people as well as establishing an environment where they feel confident.
Our approach is both friendly and professional, aimed at putting you at ease throughout the session. Even in headshot sessions, we strive to bring out enough of your personality to ensure that the resulting photos truly reflect who you are.
This approach not only enhanced the majority of our shoots but also led to high-quality photos, perfect for the purposes our customers needed them.
We highly recommend you to consider all the above aspects when choosing your London portrait photographer.

DO YOU NEED PROFESSIONAL PORTRAITS?
Exceptional service. Made us look beautiful, as jet-lagged as we are, and he was patient, attentive and skillful in all the photographs that he took. He was great at taking photos where he directed us at posing for portrait shots, and he was amazing at taking candid ones as well.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR PORTRAIT PHOTO SHOOT
Preparation will always make a significant difference in the outcome of your photos. Here are some tips & tricks to help you get ready and make the most of your experience:
Portrait photography emphasizes your appearance. While a skilled photographer can touch up imperfections, it’s beneficial to enhance your lifestyle beforehand. Prioritize healthy habits like a balanced diet, exercise, and hydration.
Additionally, consider the shoot location’s accessibility and any necessary permissions.
Choose the Right Portrait Photographer
Select a photographer whose style aligns with yours and with whom you have a good connection.
Communicate
Maintain open communication with your photographer to ensure your needs are met. After understanding your preferences, he can tailor the portrait photoshoot accordingly.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR PORTRAIT PHOTOSHOOT
Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Solid colors and timeless styles often work well for portraits, but feel free to express your personality through your wardrobe choices.
Avoid clothing with busy patterns or logos that may distract from your face. Consider bringing a few outfit options to the session so we can choose together what works best. You can also rent dresses in London and use them for the portrait session and a special dinner or night out.
We give you some wardrobe recommendations for photos below, so feel free to choose what suits the type of portrait you need.
Business Portraits
Opt for professional attire that reflects your industry and personal style. Solid colors and tailored pieces often work well.
Personal Portraits
Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and showcases your personality. Consider incorporating accessories or layers for added visual interest.
Family and Children Portraits
Coordinate outfits with complementary colors and styles. Avoid overly matching, but aim for a cohesive look that ties everyone together.
Boudoir Portraits
Select lingerie or clothing that makes you feel sexy and empowered. Focus on pieces that flatter your figure and make you feel confident.
Maternity Portraits
Embrace your beautiful bump with form-fitting dresses or flowy fabrics that accentuate your shape. Consider wearing clothing in neutral tones or soft pastels for a timeless look.
PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKE-UP IN LONDON
Whether you prefer a natural look or something more glam, it’s essential to feel good about how you look. If you’re doing your hair and makeup yourself, keep it simple and enhance your natural features.
For a more polished look, you may want to consider hiring a professional London hair and makeup artist. They can help ensure you look and feel your best on camera.
If you’re not from London or you don’t want to bother with finding a hair & makeup artist, we can take care of it for you.
Relax and Be Yourself
One of the most important things you can do is to relax and be yourself during the session. Remember that our goal is to capture the authentic you, so try to let go of any tension or nerves. Take a few deep breaths and trust in the process we know so well.
